About this course

Engineering at Oxford is a broad, intellectually rigorous discipline that treats the subject as a unified field of knowledge rather than a collection of separate specialisms. The Oxford approach is distinctive: it begins from first principles in mathematics and the physical sciences and builds outward to encompass mechanical, electrical, civil, information and biomedical engineering within a single integrated programme. The aim is to produce engineers who can think across disciplinary boundaries and contribute to the most complex technological challenges of their time.

Over three years, you will study the mathematical and scientific foundations of engineering, covering areas such as mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, electrical circuits, signal processing, control systems and materials. You will work extensively on design projects, computational modelling and laboratory experiments, learning to connect theory to practice at every stage. Oxford's tutorial system means you will discuss and defend your understanding in small groups, developing the precision of reasoning and the confidence in analysis that characterise Oxford engineering graduates.
