About this course

Electronic and software engineering is a discipline built on the principle that hardware and software are most powerfully understood together. Electronic systems, from microcontrollers to complex signal processing hardware, only become useful when programmed and integrated with software, while software increasingly depends on a precise understanding of the hardware it runs on. This joint focus gives graduates an unusually versatile technical perspective, relevant to an extraordinary range of industries from consumer electronics to aerospace.

At the University of Aberdeen you will study across four years on a full-time programme, with a year abroad that extends your engineering education to an international academic context. The programme covers the theoretical foundations of both disciplines alongside practical engineering work. Electronic engineering content includes circuit design, signal processing, control systems, and electromagnetics.

The software engineering strand places particular emphasis on distributed information systems and knowledge technologies, reflecting Aberdeen's research strengths in these areas. You will develop programming proficiency across relevant languages and environments, learn principles of software design and architecture, and understand how software systems are specified, tested, and maintained at scale. Laboratory work and project modules run throughout, giving you sustained practice in applying engineering knowledge to real design challenges.

The oil and gas industry, which has a significant presence in north-east Scotland, employs engineers with these combined skills in instrumentation, control, and systems integration.
