About this course

Aeronautical engineering is the discipline concerned with the design, construction, operation, and safety of aircraft and the systems that support them. It brings together aerodynamics, structural mechanics, propulsion, materials science, avionics, and control systems engineering, demanding a rigorous foundation in mathematics and physics alongside the systems thinking to integrate these components into complete, safe, and efficient flying machines. It is one of the most technically demanding engineering disciplines, and one with some of the most exacting safety and performance standards of any industry.

At the University of Durham, this four-year full-time MEng programme includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you structured professional and international experience alongside the academic programme. The degree goes to Master's level, reflecting the depth and breadth of technical knowledge that professional aeronautical engineering requires and aligning with the educational standard expected for Chartered Engineer status. You will study the full range of aeronautical engineering disciplines, developing the analytical and design skills to work on real aircraft and aerospace systems.

The sandwich placement year provides extended immersion in a professional engineering environment, which is one of the most valuable parts of the degree in terms of career preparation.

Durham's programme develops graduates who can contribute to engineering challenges of genuine complexity, from the aerodynamic optimisation of commercial aircraft to the structural analysis of spacecraft components.

Graduates move into careers with aerospace companies, airlines, defence contractors, and the growing space industry, as well as into motorsport, automotive engineering, and energy sectors where the technical depth of aerospace training is valued. Many pursue Chartered Engineer status through professional bodies such as the Royal Aeronautical Society. Some go on to postgraduate research in aerodynamics, structures, propulsion, or aerospace systems design.
