About this course

Energy engineering equips graduates to address one of the defining technical and social challenges of the present: designing and building the energy systems that will power societies while meeting ambitious targets for decarbonisation and sustainability. It draws on mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering principles and applies them to the generation, distribution, storage, and efficient use of energy, with increasing focus on renewable technologies and the engineering dimensions of the transition away from fossil fuels.

At Teesside University, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich placement year and work placement opportunities, ensuring that your academic study is connected to professional practice in the energy industry. The foundation year element provides an accessible entry point, giving you the mathematical, scientific, and engineering foundations you need before progressing to the main degree. You will develop your understanding of engineering design, modelling, and simulation, exploring how these processes are applied to energy systems.

You will also work with mathematical modelling software to develop and simulate models of engineering problems, gaining experience of the computational tools that are central to modern engineering practice. The sandwich placement gives you direct experience of working in an energy engineering environment, which is particularly valuable in a sector where practical knowledge and professional relationships matter.

Graduates of energy engineering programmes go on to careers in renewable energy development, energy efficiency, utilities, offshore and onshore project engineering, energy management, and technical consultancy. The North East of England has a particularly strong energy sector given its heritage and its investment in wind, hydrogen, and industrial decarbonisation, and Teesside University has strong connections to that sector.
