About this course

Energy engineering addresses the design, development and management of the systems that generate, distribute and use energy. It is a field of growing urgency and ambition, sitting at the heart of the transition from fossil fuels to renewable and low-carbon energy sources that is one of the defining technological challenges of the coming decades. Energy engineers work on solar and wind power systems, energy storage technologies, smart grids, district heating, energy efficiency in buildings and industry, nuclear power and the integration of diverse energy sources into reliable and sustainable supply systems.

At the University of East Anglia this three-year full-time programme develops your understanding of the engineering principles underpinning energy systems alongside the environmental, economic and policy dimensions of the energy transition. You will study thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, electrical systems, materials science, renewable energy technologies and the engineering design processes through which energy systems are conceived, built and evaluated. UEA has a strong record in environmental and sustainability research and is committed to the serious engagement with the challenges of decarbonisation that this degree reflects.

The programme develops both technical engineering competence and the broader systems thinking that energy engineering at a societal scale demands.

Graduates go on to work in renewable energy development, energy consultancy, power systems engineering, energy management, government and regulatory roles in the energy sector, and research and development in energy technology. The urgency of the net-zero agenda means that energy engineers are in growing demand, with roles available across the private sector, public utilities, government agencies and international organisations working on climate and energy. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in energy engineering, environmental engineering, or sustainable development.
