About this course

Electronics and computer engineering is a discipline that addresses the hardware and software foundations of modern computing and electronic systems. It is concerned with how processors, circuits, communication systems, and embedded devices are designed and built, and how software and hardware are integrated to create systems that work reliably in the real world. As digital technology has become embedded in virtually every aspect of modern life, from consumer devices and communications networks to medical equipment and industrial control systems, the demand for engineers who understand both the hardware and software dimensions of computing has grown substantially.

At Newcastle University, this four-year full-time programme combines in-depth study of computer engineering with a distinctive industrial project element embedded in the final year. You will develop programming skills and practical knowledge of how software and hardware interact, learning to combine computer systems with electronic architectures across a wide range of applications. The industrial project is a significant feature of the degree, giving you direct engagement with a real engineering challenge in a professional context, and developing the judgement and communication skills that industry values alongside technical competence.

You will study digital electronics, microprocessors, computer architecture, operating systems, embedded systems, and signal processing, alongside software engineering and programming.

Newcastle's strong engineering tradition and the North East's substantial industrial and technology base provide a professional context that informs the programme throughout.

Graduates go on to work in electronics design, embedded systems engineering, software development, computer architecture, communications, defence, automotive systems, and a wide range of other sectors where hardware-software integration is needed. Many pursue professional engineering qualifications or postgraduate study. The combination of electronic and computing expertise is particularly valued in the growing fields of Internet of Things, robotics, and autonomous systems.
