About this course

Electronic engineering is the discipline concerned with the design and development of circuits, devices, and systems that process electrical signals to transmit information, control machines, sense the world, and power the technologies on which modern life depends. From the chips inside smartphones and the sensors in medical devices to the control systems in industrial automation and the electronics in aircraft, electronic engineers design the hardware that makes digital and analogue systems work. The field draws on physics, mathematics, and materials science, and its applications span virtually every sector of the modern economy.

At the University of Bedfordshire, this four-year BEng programme with foundation year is accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, and fully meets the academic requirements for registration as an incorporated engineer. This professional recognition is significant: IET accreditation means the degree is formally recognised within the engineering profession and provides a foundation for progression to incorporated or chartered engineer status. The foundation year provides an additional year of scientific and mathematical preparation before the main engineering curriculum begins.

You will study electronics, circuit design, digital systems, signal processing, control systems, embedded systems, and the electromagnetic theory that underpins the field, developing both theoretical understanding and the practical design and problem-solving skills that professional engineers need. The programme develops your ability to design electronic systems that work reliably and to understand the physical principles that govern their behaviour.

Many pursue IET professional membership and chartered engineer status.
