About this course

Electronic engineering is the discipline that designs and builds the devices, circuits, and systems that underpin modern technology. From communications infrastructure and medical imaging equipment to renewable energy systems and autonomous vehicles, electronic engineers create the hardware on which the digital world depends. The field combines fundamental physics and mathematics with the practical creativity needed to design systems that meet demanding performance requirements in real-world conditions.

At the University of York, this three-year full-time degree develops graduates who are knowledgeable, highly skilled, professional, and adept at communication and project management. You will study the core principles of electronics, including circuit design, signals and systems, digital electronics, microprocessors, communications, and electromagnetics, developing the theoretical depth to understand why systems behave as they do and the practical skills to design, build, and test them. A sandwich year placement gives you the opportunity to spend a year working as an engineer in industry before your final year, gaining professional experience and building the networks that support career development.

Work placement activity is integrated throughout the programme. A typical entry tariff of 120 points applies.

You will develop technical skills in design, analysis, simulation, and laboratory work alongside the professional capabilities in communication, project management, and teamwork that employers across the sector value. York has a strong record in engineering education and research, and the degree is taught in an environment that takes both rigour and practical application seriously.

Graduates go on to careers in telecommunications, defence and aerospace, medical devices, consumer electronics, semiconductor design, automotive technology, energy systems, and technology consultancy. Many also pursue postgraduate study in electronic engineering, communications, embedded systems, or related fields. Chartered Engineer status through professional bodies such as the IET is a common goal for graduates building their professional credentials.
