About this course

Electronic engineering and computer systems addresses the hardware and software foundations of the digital world. Electronic engineering is concerned with the design and analysis of circuits, devices, signals and systems, encompassing analogue and digital electronics, microprocessors, sensors, power systems and the embedded controllers that operate in everything from smartphones and cars to industrial machinery and medical devices. Computer systems engineering examines how hardware and software interact, how operating systems and networks function, and how digital systems are designed and tested.

Together they equip you to work at the level where electronics and computing meet.

At the University of Huddersfield this four-year programme includes a foundation year that builds the mathematical and physical sciences grounding you need before the engineering degree begins. The foundation year makes the programme accessible to students who have the aptitude for engineering but may not have the specific A-level combination that direct entry requires. Once you progress into the degree you will cover circuit design, digital systems, signal processing, embedded systems, microcontrollers, software engineering, network systems and engineering management, with substantial laboratory and project work throughout.

A sandwich year is built into the programme, giving you a full year of industrial experience alongside your studies, with further work placement also incorporated. The combination of a well-structured entry pathway and significant industry experience is particularly practical.

Graduates go on to work in electronics design, embedded systems development, systems integration, telecommunications, aerospace, automotive electronics, consumer electronics, defence and the technology industry broadly. The intersection of electronic engineering and computer systems makes graduates versatile in an industry where hardware and software expertise must work together. Many go on to postgraduate study in engineering, computer science or related fields, and some pursue chartered engineering status.
