About this course

Electronic engineering and computer systems addresses the relationship between hardware and software at the heart of modern technology. Where electronic engineering focuses on circuits, signals, and the physical devices that process electrical information, computer systems engineering is concerned with the architectures, operating environments, and programming frameworks that make those devices useful. Together they produce graduates who understand technology from the transistor up, equipped to design and develop the embedded systems, digital platforms, and intelligent devices that underpin contemporary engineering.

At the University of Huddersfield, this three-year full-time degree includes a sandwich year, providing you with a substantial professional placement in industry before your final year. The placement is an integral part of your development, giving you the chance to work on real engineering projects, apply your academic knowledge in professional contexts, and build the practical skills and industry connections that employers are looking for. Throughout the programme you will study digital electronics, circuit design, microprocessors, embedded systems, signal processing, computer architecture, programming, networks, and real-time systems.

You will work in well-equipped laboratories on design projects that bridge theory and application, developing the problem-solving and technical skills that engineering practice demands.

Graduates in electronic engineering and computer systems go on to work in the design and development of electronics, embedded software, communications systems, robotics, medical devices, automotive technology, and defence. Roles span hardware design, firmware development, systems integration, project engineering, and technical consultancy. Many graduates pursue chartered engineer status, and the degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate research in electronics, computer engineering, or related disciplines.
