About this course

Electronic and communication engineering is the discipline that designs and builds the systems through which modern society communicates, processes information, and controls its physical environment. It encompasses circuit design, signal processing, telecommunications, wireless systems, embedded electronics, and the hardware and software integration that characterise modern electronic products and infrastructure. From the mobile networks that connect billions of people to the sensors in medical devices and the control systems in aircraft and industrial machinery, electronic and communications engineers are responsible for the technology that makes the connected world work.

This four-year full-time programme at the University of Brighton includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you significant professional experience within the degree. You will study analogue and digital electronics, communication theory, signal processing, electromagnetic compatibility, microcontrollers and embedded systems, wireless communications, and the design and testing methodologies used in professional engineering. The sandwich year places you in an engineering company, where you will work on real systems alongside experienced engineers, applying and extending what you have learned in the university.

Brighton's location on the South Coast, with strong connections to technology and aerospace companies in the region, supports the programme's industry engagement.

Graduates from this programme pursue careers in telecommunications, consumer electronics, aerospace and defence, the automotive sector, the energy industry, and the technology sector broadly. Roles include electronic design engineer, communications systems engineer, embedded systems developer, RF engineer, and project engineer. Professional registration through the Institution of Engineering and Technology or the Institution of Engineering and Technology provides a career development pathway toward chartered engineer status.
