About this course

Electrical and mechanical engineering is a dual-discipline qualification that equips you to work across the two most fundamental branches of engineering. Mechanical engineering is concerned with the design, analysis, and manufacture of physical systems, from machines and structures to thermal systems and fluid mechanics. Electrical engineering covers the generation, transmission, and application of electrical energy, as well as electronic systems, control, and instrumentation.

Together, the two disciplines give you the breadth to engage with the integrated electromechanical systems that define modern engineering practice.

This part-time programme at the University of the Highlands and Islands allows you to develop across both engineering disciplines while managing other commitments, taking fewer course units per week than a full-time programme and progressing through the degree at a pace that suits your circumstances. The part-time format is well suited to those who are already working in engineering roles and want to formalise or extend their qualifications, or who have other responsibilities that make full-time study impractical. You will develop skills in engineering mathematics, mechanics, thermodynamics, circuits and electronics, control systems, and design, building the theoretical and practical competencies that professional engineering requires.

Electrical and mechanical engineering graduates are in demand across a wide range of industries. Energy generation and distribution, manufacturing, automotive, aerospace, defence, utilities, and the built environment all employ engineers who can work across mechanical and electrical domains. Roles in maintenance engineering, design engineering, project engineering, and technical management are common career destinations.

The breadth of the qualification also provides a strong basis for progression to Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status through the relevant professional engineering institutions. Postgraduate study in either electrical or mechanical engineering, or in interdisciplinary fields such as mechatronics or energy systems, is an option for those who wish to specialise further.
