Electrical and Electronic Engineering with Foundation Year
Electrical and electronic engineering is concerned with the design and operation of systems that generate, transmit, and control electrical energy and process information through electronic signals. Electricity powers our homes, runs our domestic devices, and keeps industry operating, and the engineers who design these systems are central to the energy transition, the development of communications technology, and the operation of the digital economy.
At the University of Derby, this distinctive BEng (Hons) programme takes a four-year full-time approach that includes a foundation year, providing a well-supported entry route for students who need to build their mathematical and physical science foundations before entering the main degree. You will study the fundamental principles of electrical engineering, circuit theory, power systems, electronics, signal processing, and control systems, alongside more advanced topics in embedded systems, power electronics, and digital communications. Laboratory and design work develop your practical skills alongside the theoretical understanding.
The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement, giving you an unusually rich range of professional and international experience. The typical entry tariff is 104 UCAS points.
Graduates from electrical and electronic engineering programmes go on to careers in power systems, renewable energy, telecommunications, defence, transportation, and automation, as well as in design consultancy, systems integration, and project management.
