About this course

Electrical and electronic engineering is the discipline that underpins the modern world's technological infrastructure. From the generation and distribution of electrical power to the design of microchips, communication systems, medical devices, renewable energy technologies, and the electronic systems at the heart of aircraft, industrial machinery, and consumer products, electrical and electronic engineers design, build, and maintain the systems on which contemporary life depends. The discipline spans a wide range from high-voltage power engineering to analogue and digital circuit design, embedded systems, signal processing, and telecommunications.

At the University of Hull this four-year programme includes a foundation year, providing a carefully supported entry into degree-level engineering for students who need to strengthen their foundational knowledge before the main degree begins. You will develop skills in circuit analysis, electromagnetics, digital systems, control theory, signal processing, and power engineering, learning to apply the principles of electrical and electronic engineering across a range of applications. Electrical and electronic engineering graduates are employed across an extraordinarily wide range of industries. The energy sector, including both conventional and renewable generation and smart grid technology, is a major employer, as are telecommunications, defence, automotive, aerospace, medical devices, consumer electronics, and manufacturing. The discipline is also central to the development of electric vehicles, battery systems, and the power electronics that underlie the transition to low-carbon energy.

Further study at postgraduate level in electrical engineering, electronics, power systems, or related fields is available for those who wish to specialise, and the degree provides a strong foundation for progression towards chartered engineer status.
