About this course

Electrical and electronic engineering is the discipline that underpins the systems controlling power distribution, communications, computing, medical devices, and automation. Engineers in this field design, model, simulate, and test the circuits, systems, and processes that make modern infrastructure and technology work, applying mathematical and physical principles to solve practical problems across a vast range of industries.

At Teesside University, this four-year full-time programme includes an integrated foundation year that prepares you for degree-level engineering study by building the mathematical and scientific foundations the discipline requires. From the outset, you will engage with the design process: how engineering problems are framed, how solutions are modelled and tested, and how technical ideas are communicated through engineering drawing, calculation, and written commentary. You will explore design using both mechanical and electrical engineering principles, incorporating aspects of control systems design and simulation.

Mathematical modelling software gives you the tools to represent and analyse engineering systems quantitatively, building the computational literacy that professional engineers rely on. The sandwich placement year is a defining feature of the programme, giving you the opportunity to work in a professional engineering environment for an extended period and to apply your academic knowledge to real projects. Work placement experience is built into the programme throughout.

You will graduate with both the theoretical understanding and the practical skills that employers in the engineering sector look for, alongside the professional confidence that comes from genuine workplace experience.

Graduates go on to work as electrical engineers, electronics engineers, control systems engineers, and automation specialists across sectors including energy, telecommunications, manufacturing, healthcare technology, and defence. The degree provides a strong foundation for progression to chartered engineer status and for postgraduate study in electrical engineering, power systems, or embedded systems.
