About this course

Electrical and electronic engineering underpins the modern world more comprehensively than almost any other discipline. From renewable energy generation and smart grids to autonomous vehicles, mobile communications, medical devices, and robotics, the systems that make contemporary life function are designed and built by electrical and electronic engineers. The field encompasses the generation, transmission, and control of electrical power, the design of electronic circuits and systems, signal processing, communications, and the interface between hardware and software in complex systems.

At the University of Sussex, this four-year full-time programme includes both a foundation year and an industrial placement year. The foundation year ensures you have the mathematical and scientific preparation to succeed at degree level before the engineering content begins in earnest. The industrial placement gives you the opportunity to work within a real engineering environment, applying your developing skills and building the professional experience that employers value.

Sussex's research strengths in sensors, flexible electronics, medical robotics and imaging, 5G communications, and space systems inform the teaching throughout, connecting you to the frontiers of the discipline.

You will study circuit theory, electromagnetics, digital systems, signals and systems, control engineering, power electronics, and communications, developing both the analytical depth and the practical competence that engineering careers require. The degree is designed to produce graduates who are ready to contribute to real engineering projects from their first days in work.

Graduates go on to work in the energy sector, telecommunications, defence, automotive, aerospace, medical technology, and a wide range of other industries. Roles include electronics design engineer, systems engineer, power engineer, and communications engineer. Many pursue professional engineering qualifications and chartered engineer status.

Postgraduate study in electrical or electronic engineering is an option for those wishing to develop specialist expertise.
