About this course

Electrical and electronic engineering is the discipline that designs and builds the systems on which modern civilisation depends: power grids and renewable energy infrastructure, communications networks, computing hardware, sensors and control systems, and the electronics embedded in everything from household appliances to aircraft and medical devices. It requires rigorous training in the principles of electric circuits, electromagnetic theory, digital systems, signal processing, and the mathematics that underlies all of these, combined with practical design and problem-solving skills that allow engineers to apply that knowledge in real systems.

At Leicester this three-year full-time programme addresses both current and future industrial needs, with specialisms available in hybrid and electric aviation, e-transportation and sustainable energy, and the Internet of Things. These reflect some of the most significant engineering challenges of the coming decades: decarbonising transport and aviation, connecting the physical world through networked sensors, and building the energy systems that sustainable economies require. You will develop advanced technical skills in programming and software alongside the hardware disciplines of the degree, reflecting the increasingly integral role of software in modern electrical and electronic engineering.

A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement experience are all built into the programme, providing professional experience, international study, and a portfolio of practical work alongside your academic studies.

Graduates move into careers in power engineering, renewable energy, automotive and aviation electronics, communications and telecommunications, embedded systems, control engineering, and technology consultancy. Many work towards chartered engineer status through professional institutions such as the Institution of Engineering and Technology. Others continue to postgraduate study or doctoral research in electrical engineering or related fields.
