Egyptology

Egyptology is the study of one of the most extraordinary civilisations in human history: a society that endured for more than three thousand years, developed one of the world's earliest and most distinctive writing systems, built monuments that have survived millennia, and produced art, literature, religion, and philosophy of enduring fascination. The discipline draws on archaeology, art history, linguistics, anthropology, and history to build the most complete possible picture of ancient Egyptian life and thought.

At the University of Liverpool, which houses one of the largest Egyptology departments in the world, this three-year full-time degree gives you an in-depth understanding of ancient Egypt's archaeology, art, religion, history, and society. Language training is central to the programme: you will develop your ability to read and interpret the ancient Egyptian language from elementary to advanced level, giving you direct access to hieroglyphic texts and inscriptions as primary sources. Liverpool's Egyptologists bring their current fieldwork and research projects into the classroom, connecting your studies to live discoveries and cutting-edge interpretations of the ancient world.

The programme includes a year abroad, broadening your academic and personal horizons. The typical entry tariff is 120 UCAS points.

Graduates of Egyptology programmes find careers in museums, galleries, heritage organisations, academic research, publishing, education, and the cultural sector. Many graduates work with ancient Egypt collections in major museums in the UK and internationally, while others pursue academic careers as lecturers and researchers.
