About this course

Education with English is a programme that combines the systematic study of how learning happens, how educational systems work, and what good teaching looks like, with the analytical and communicative depth that English as a subject brings. English study develops close reading, critical thinking, and an understanding of how language shapes meaning; education study asks foundational questions about the purposes of schooling, the nature of childhood and development, and the social structures within which education takes place.

At Anglia Ruskin University, this three-year full-time programme gives you grounding in educational theory, policy, and practice alongside a genuine engagement with English literature, linguistics, and communication. You will examine how children and young people learn and develop, the factors that help or hinder educational achievement, and the social and political contexts in which schools operate. The English strand develops your own literacy and critical skills while giving you specialist subject knowledge that is directly relevant to teaching English in secondary schools or to working in literacy support roles.

Graduates of education with English programmes are well prepared for initial teacher training, whether in primary or secondary settings. The combination of educational foundations and English subject knowledge gives graduates a particularly strong basis for teaching English at secondary level or working in literacy, SEND, and intervention roles. Beyond teaching, careers in educational publishing, assessment, curriculum development, school leadership support, community learning, and educational research are open to graduates.

Postgraduate study in education, English, or a specialist education field is a common next step.
