Education is more than the transmission of knowledge; it is the practice through which societies reproduce themselves, through which individuals discover what they are capable of, and through which communities sustain and challenge their values. Studying education as a discipline means examining all of this critically, asking how learning happens, how teaching can be made more effective, how educational systems are organised and why, and what role education plays in addressing or perpetuating social inequality.

At Lincoln, this three-year full-time programme covers the theory and practice of education across a range of contexts and age groups. You will explore how people learn across different stages of development, the role of curriculum and assessment in shaping educational experience, the influence of social factors such as class, gender, and ethnicity on educational outcomes, and the policy landscape that governs how educational institutions operate. A sandwich year in industry and a work placement are built into the programme, giving you direct experience in educational or related settings and the opportunity to connect theory to professional practice.

These experiences are genuinely formative for students who intend to work in education, and they also develop skills that transfer into a much wider range of contexts.

Graduates from education degrees go on to work as teachers, teaching assistants, and educational support staff after completing appropriate professional qualifications, and also in youth work, community education, educational policy, learning and development in organisations, charity and voluntary sector work, and research. Many pursue postgraduate study, including the PGCE for those wishing to qualify as school teachers, or master's programmes in education, leadership, or policy. The degree opens multiple pathways and develops critical thinking, communication, and reflective practice that are valued across many professions.
