Education as an academic discipline is genuinely broader than most people expect. It does not simply train teachers, though it certainly prepares those who wish to go on to teaching: it asks fundamental questions about what learning is, how it happens, what schooling is for, how policy shapes who gets educated and how, and how social, cultural, and economic contexts interact with the educational experiences of individuals and communities. From early childhood to adult learning, from classroom practice to global development policy, education is a field that touches nearly every aspect of human life.

At the University of East Anglia, this three-year full-time programme engages with education as one of the most exciting and varied topics available for academic study. You will examine how educational systems develop and change, how learning is understood and supported across different contexts, and how education intersects with major social issues including inequality, disability, technology, and international development. The programme draws on psychology, sociology, philosophy, history, and policy studies, developing a genuinely multidisciplinary understanding of education and the ability to think critically about evidence and practice.

Discussion of contemporary and pressing issues in education, both locally and globally, is central to the learning environment.

Graduates from education degrees go on to careers in teaching (usually after completing initial teacher training), educational leadership, educational support roles, early years provision, social work, youth work, international development, research, policy, and the civil service. The analytical and communication skills the degree develops also transfer well into many other professional contexts. Further study at postgraduate level in education, educational psychology, SEND, social work, and related fields is open to those who wish to specialise.
