Education Studies
Education studies asks fundamental questions about what education is for, how it works, who it serves, and what it could become. Rather than training you directly as a school teacher, it examines education as a social, cultural, political, and philosophical phenomenon, drawing on sociology, history, psychology, philosophy, and policy analysis to understand how learning happens and how educational systems shape lives and opportunities. It is a degree for those who want to understand education critically and contribute to changing it for the better.
At Leeds Beckett University this three-year full-time programme gives you the freedom to explore what it truly means to be an educator and to engage with the real-world challenges that confront educational practice and policy. You will examine questions of equality, access, and inclusion alongside the history and politics of educational reform, and consider how education operates differently for different communities and in different national contexts. A year abroad is available within the programme, giving you the chance to compare educational systems and practices internationally and to develop a genuinely global perspective on the issues you study.
You will engage actively with pressing questions about social change and the role education can play in addressing inequality and disadvantage.
Graduates in education studies pursue a wide range of careers. Many go into teaching, typically following the degree with a PGCE or another route into qualified teacher status. Others move into educational policy, youth work, community development, school leadership support, educational research, and roles in charities and organisations working with young people.
The critical thinking and analytical skills developed through the degree are valued in the civil service, social work, and a range of public sector roles. Postgraduate study in education, social policy, psychology, or related fields is also a common next step for those who want to deepen their expertise or move into research.
