Education And History

Education and history is a combination that brings together two disciplines that each ask fundamental questions about how societies pass on knowledge, values, and culture across generations. Education studies examines how schooling and learning are organised, what purposes education serves, and how educational institutions shape individual and collective life. History asks how societies have changed over time, how we know what we know about the past, and how historical understanding can illuminate the present.

Together the two subjects develop a broad and critical perspective on how societies reproduce and transform themselves through the institutions of learning and through the transmission of historical knowledge.

At Edge Hill University you will study this three-year full-time programme, which includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a placement. Edge Hill has a strong reputation for programmes connected to education and for placing students in professional contexts where they can apply their learning. The sandwich year and placement give you direct experience in educational settings or other relevant organisations, and the year abroad broadens your perspective on how education and historical understanding work in different national contexts.

Across the programme you will study the sociology and philosophy of education, educational policy, historical periods and methods, and research approaches that draw on both disciplines. The typical entry tariff is 104 points.

Graduates from education and history programmes most commonly go on to postgraduate teacher training, qualifying as primary or secondary teachers in history or wider humanities. Others work in educational support and mentoring, youth work, heritage education, museum education, community learning, and the voluntary sector. The historical understanding developed during the degree is also valuable in archival and heritage work, journalism, and public policy.

Further study in education, history, archival science, or museum studies is a route taken by graduates who wish to pursue specialist professional or research careers.
