Education and English together prepare you to engage deeply with literature and with the ways in which people learn, two areas that are closely connected given the central role of reading and language in education at every level. As an English student, you will enjoy the best of old and new, grounding yourself in literary classics while also exploring new fields of literature, reading texts from a wide range of literary periods, and debating key issues such as identity, race, gender, and what it means to be human. Education study develops your understanding of how learning happens, how schools and educational systems function, and how curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment shape the opportunities available to young people.

At the University of Strathclyde, this four-year full-time programme develops your literary knowledge and critical analysis alongside your understanding of educational theory, policy, and practice. You will read across a broad range of literary periods and forms, engaging with contemporary debates in literary studies while also exploring the educational contexts in which literature and literacy play a role. A year abroad is built into the programme, giving you the experience of studying in a different cultural and academic context.

Graduates go on to careers in teaching, including primary and secondary education with additional training, as well as in educational administration, curriculum development, children's publishing, library and information work, journalism, and community education. The combination of literary and educational understanding is particularly valuable for those working with young people in formal or informal learning contexts. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in education, teacher training, or English.
