Economics
Economics is the study of how individuals, organisations and societies make choices under conditions of scarcity, and how those choices ripple through markets, institutions and everyday life. It is a discipline that ranges from the intimate, such as why two people might trade with one another, to the global, such as how monetary policy affects employment across an entire economy. Far from being a purely abstract subject, economics engages directly with some of the most pressing questions in public and commercial life.
At Manchester Metropolitan University, this three-year full-time programme includes a sandwich year and a work placement, giving you the opportunity to apply your economic thinking in a real professional environment and build the practical skills that employers value. You will be challenged to think carefully about the choices people make and how those decisions, individually and collectively, affect employment, the distribution of wealth, public spending and international trade. The programme develops both theoretical and applied dimensions of economics, equipping you to analyse markets, evaluate policy and interpret economic data.
You will study microeconomics and macroeconomics, develop quantitative and data analysis skills, and engage with applied areas such as labour economics, environmental economics, development and international trade. The ability to work with models, interpret evidence and communicate economic reasoning clearly is central to what you will develop across the degree.
Graduates from economics degrees are among the most broadly employed of any subject, working in financial services, management consultancy, public policy, central banking, international organisations, research, journalism, retail and corporate finance. The analytical rigour the subject develops is valued wherever complex decisions need to be made and evaluated. Postgraduate study in economics, finance, public policy or related fields is a natural progression for those who want to specialise or pursue research and academic careers.
