Economics and History

Economics and history is a combination that brings together two disciplines concerned with how the world came to be as it is and what forces are shaping it now. Economics provides the analytical tools to understand how markets, policies, and institutions affect living standards, distributional outcomes, and economic growth. History provides the contextual depth to understand how economic systems developed, how crises have unfolded in the past, and how the decisions of governments and societies have had consequences that extend across generations.

Together they offer a rigorous and empirically grounded approach to the major challenges facing economies today, from globalisation and trade disputes to inequality, climate change, and financial instability.

At Liverpool Hope University, studying economics means engaging with these major global challenges through both theoretical and historical lenses. You will study microeconomics and macroeconomics alongside historical case studies and methods, developing both quantitative analytical skills and the ability to contextualise economic phenomena in their historical settings. The programme runs over three years full-time and includes a sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and a work placement, giving you significant professional and international experience alongside your academic studies.

Graduates of economics and history programmes pursue careers in economic analysis, the civil service, financial services, policy research, journalism, the heritage sector, and education. The combination of quantitative rigour and historical depth is valued in roles that require both analytical precision and contextual understanding.
