Economics and Finance

Economics and finance are disciplines that are closely related in their intellectual foundations and deeply intertwined in professional practice. Economics examines how individuals, firms, and governments make decisions about scarce resources, and how those decisions aggregate into markets, institutions, and the patterns of economic development that shape standards of living and life chances. Finance applies economic reasoning to the specific questions of how money is raised, invested, and managed, analysing asset prices, risk, capital markets, and the behaviour of financial institutions.

Together, they provide a rigorous and practically valuable preparation for careers in the financial sector and beyond.

At the University of Lincoln this three-year full-time programme develops your understanding of both disciplines in a student-focused environment. You will study microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics alongside financial theory, investment analysis, corporate finance, and financial markets. You will develop both analytical and quantitative skills, building the ability to engage with economic data and financial models and to communicate findings clearly.

The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, giving you extensive professional experience and international exposure alongside your academic studies.

Graduates from economics and finance programmes work in banking, investment management, financial consultancy, insurance, the civil service, economic consultancy, and accounting firms. The combination of economic analysis and financial knowledge is valued across a wide range of roles in the financial sector, from analysis and research through to commercial banking and risk management. Many graduates also pursue professional qualifications in finance or accountancy, or go on to postgraduate study in economics, finance, or business administration.
