Ecology and Conservation

Ecology and conservation addresses one of the most urgent challenges of our time: how to understand living systems well enough to protect and restore them. Ecology is the science of the relationships between organisms and their environments, examining how populations, communities, and ecosystems are structured, how energy and nutrients flow through them, and how they respond to environmental change. Conservation applies ecological understanding to the practical challenge of maintaining biodiversity in a world transformed by human activity, asking how habitats can be protected and restored, how species can be managed, and how the competing demands of development, agriculture, and nature can be reconciled.

At the University of East Anglia, this three-year full-time programme develops your ecological knowledge and field skills alongside an understanding of conservation science and practice. You will study population ecology, community ecology, ecosystem processes, conservation biology, and the policy and management frameworks within which conservation work is carried out. Fieldwork is central to the programme, and you will develop skills in ecological survey, species identification, habitat assessment, and data analysis in both UK and, where possible, international contexts.

UEA's location in East Anglia, a region with significant and varied habitats including the Norfolk Broads, the Brecks, and the coast, provides an excellent practical context for the ecological fieldwork that runs throughout the degree.

UEA has strong research strengths in ecology and environmental science, and undergraduate students benefit from proximity to active research groups working on biodiversity, climate change, and conservation.

Graduates work in nature conservation organisations, environmental consultancies, government agencies such as Natural England, the Forestry Commission and National Parks, wildlife charities, and academic research. The combination of ecological science and conservation practice prepares graduates for roles that are directly relevant to the environmental challenges of the coming decades. Postgraduate study in ecology, conservation biology, or environmental management is a further route for those wishing to develop specialist expertise.
