About this course

Ecology and conservation science addresses one of the defining challenges of our time: understanding and protecting biodiversity in a world transformed by human activity. Ecology examines the relationships between organisms and their environments, asking how populations grow and decline, how communities are structured, how energy and nutrients flow through ecosystems, and how environmental changes disrupt or reshape these processes. Conservation biology applies ecological knowledge to the practical problem of preventing species loss and restoring degraded ecosystems.

At Nottingham Trent University, this three-year, full-time degree develops both scientific rigour and applied practical skills. You will study population ecology, community ecology, and ecosystem science alongside conservation planning, biodiversity assessment, habitat management, and conservation policy. Fieldwork is central to the programme: you will have opportunities to gather and analyse ecological data in real environments, developing the survey techniques, species identification skills, and data handling competencies that professional ecologists need.

Laboratory work complements fieldwork, and you will engage with the statistical and computational methods used to analyse ecological datasets.
