East Asian Studies
East Asian Studies draws together the languages, histories, cultures, and politics of China, Japan, Korea, and their neighbours to offer a genuinely comparative understanding of one of the world's most consequential regions. As East Asia continues to shape global economics, diplomacy, and culture, graduates who can navigate its complexity with linguistic competence and intellectual depth are in growing demand across many fields.
At the University of Manchester you will examine East Asian societies through multiple lenses, from classical literature and religious traditions to contemporary politics and international relations. You will develop critical thinking about how the region has been understood both from within and from the outside, questioning assumptions that come with studying cultures across significant linguistic and cultural distance. Language learning is central to the programme, and you will build working proficiency in at least one East Asian language alongside your academic study of the region.
Seminars and tutorials encourage you to read primary sources, engage with competing scholarly interpretations, and develop arguments that draw on evidence from across disciplines.
The programme runs over three years full time. You will study alongside academics whose research spans Chinese political economy, Japanese cinema, Korean history, and much more, giving you access to current scholarly debate as well as foundational texts. You will build transferable skills in analysis, cross-cultural communication, and writing that are valued in many professional contexts.
Graduates of East Asian Studies go on to careers in international business, diplomacy, journalism, the civil service, NGOs, and cultural organisations, as well as postgraduate study in area studies, international relations, law, and business. The combination of language ability and regional expertise opens doors in sectors where genuine understanding of East Asia is a practical advantage rather than simply an academic credential.
