About this course

Earth sciences is the study of the planet we live on: its structure, processes, history and future. It is an interdisciplinary field that draws on geology, geography, climatology, hydrology, chemistry and physics to understand how the Earth system works, how it has changed over geological time, and how human activity is now altering it in ways that carry profound implications for natural hazards, resource availability, climate and long-term sustainability. Earth scientists generate the knowledge on which decisions about energy, water, land use and environmental risk depend.

At the University of Derby the programme is part time and includes a foundation year, which builds the scientific and quantitative foundations you need before the main degree begins. You will study the full breadth of the Earth sciences, exploring geological processes, natural hazards, climate change, water systems, green energy, sustainable development and natural resources, with practical fieldwork and applied learning running throughout. The sandwich year and work placement opportunities mean you can develop professional experience alongside your academic study, connecting your learning to the fast-growing UK and international Earth science job sector.

Graduates from Earth science degrees work in a wide range of sectors including energy, mining and resources, environmental consultancy, geotechnical engineering, water management, the public sector and academic research. Roles include geologist, environmental scientist, hydrogeologist, geotechnical engineer, sustainability consultant and earth observation specialist. The growing global emphasis on energy transition, climate resilience and environmental regulation is expanding demand for Earth science graduates significantly.

Postgraduate study in geology, environmental geoscience, hydrogeology, climate science or resource management is a natural further route for those seeking specialist expertise.
