About this course

Earth sciences is the study of the planet we live on, its materials, processes, history, and future. It encompasses geology, geochemistry, geophysics, climatology, hydrology, and environmental science, drawing on chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics to understand how the Earth has evolved over billions of years and how it functions today. Earth scientists investigate natural hazards such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, track the impacts of climate change, locate and assess natural resources, and develop the knowledge needed to guide sustainable development policy.

At Derby this applied degree is designed to be genuinely interdisciplinary, drawing on geology, geography, climatology, hydrology, chemistry, and physics alongside the natural, environmental, planetary, and social sciences. The programme includes a foundation year for students who need additional preparation before the main degree, and a sandwich year that provides substantial professional experience in a relevant industry or research setting. Work placement opportunities and a year abroad are also available, ensuring that you engage with earth science in professional and international contexts.

The practical orientation of the programme means you develop fieldwork skills, laboratory competencies, and data analysis capabilities alongside your theoretical knowledge.

Graduates go on to careers in the energy sector, mining and minerals, environmental consulting, civil engineering, hazard risk assessment, government agencies such as the British Geological Survey, and academic research. The urgent demand for expertise in clean energy, carbon capture, climate adaptation, and sustainable resource management means that earth scientists are increasingly valued across a broad range of sectors. The programme's applied focus and professional placement experience at Derby prepare you for rapid entry into a growing UK and international job market.

Postgraduate study in geology, geophysics, or environmental science is also a common path.

Would I choose it again? Probably yes, with caveats. The best part: access to facilities (workshop, equipment, specialist software) is genuinely first-rate. If I'm honest, would like to see more industry guest speakers in later years. On th…

Solid, with caveats
It's been a mixed experience, but mostly positive. The best part: the final show is a proper platform β€” industry people come to see it. If I'm honest, admin can be slow to respond, especially at start of term. On the city β€” the city is a br…
