About this course

Earth and planetary science is the study of the geological and geophysical processes that have shaped our planet over 4.5 billion years, and the comparative study of other bodies in the solar system. It draws on physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics to understand phenomena as varied as volcanic eruptions, earthquake cycles, ocean circulation, mineral formation, ice age cycles, and the conditions that allow life to emerge and persist. In an era of climate change, energy transition, and growing interest in space exploration, earth scientists are working on some of the most consequential scientific and societal questions of our time.

At the University of Manchester you will study this four-year full-time programme, which includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and a placement. This combination of international and professional experience is exceptional for an earth sciences degree, giving you fieldwork and research experience across multiple geological environments and direct engagement with professional practice in areas such as the minerals industry, environmental consultancy, energy, or academic research. Across the programme you will study mineralogy, petrology, structural geology, geophysics, palaeontology, geochemistry, and the geology of sedimentary basins, alongside planetary science content that sets Earth in its broader cosmic context.
