Early Years & Primary Practice
Early years and primary practice is a field of professional and academic study focused on the development, education, and wellbeing of children from birth to around the age of twelve. Drawing on developmental psychology, education theory, sociology, and policy analysis, it asks how children learn, what environments best support their growth, how inequality affects educational outcomes, and what practitioners need to know to make a genuine positive difference in children's lives. At the University of Suffolk, this two-year full-time degree provides a structured grounding in the theories and practices that underpin early years and primary education. You will explore key frameworks for understanding how children develop across cognitive, emotional, social, and physical dimensions, and examine the curriculum and pedagogical approaches that best support learning in the early and primary years. Reflective practice is central to the programme, encouraging you to connect theory to the realities of professional settings and to develop the critical thinking needed to respond thoughtfully to the diverse needs of children.
