Early Years and Primary Education (3-7) with Qualified Teacher Status

Early years and primary education is one of the most foundational areas of the teaching profession, concerned with the learning and development of children from the earliest years through to the end of Key Stage 2. At Sheffield Hallam University, this three-year full-time programme leads to Qualified Teacher Status for the 3-7 age range, preparing you to teach across the early years and lower primary phases. You will study theories of learning, pedagogy, curriculum design, assessment and behaviour management, alongside inclusive practices that promote positive outcomes for all learners. The sandwich year in professional placement and the work placement components give you substantial classroom experience in schools, developing your teaching confidence and competence in real settings under the guidance of experienced mentors.

Qualified Teacher Status opens the door to teaching in maintained schools across England and Wales. Graduates from early years and primary education programmes work in nurseries, reception classes and primary schools, and many go on to develop specialist roles in areas including SEND, early intervention, curriculum leadership and school management. Postgraduate study, including the National Professional Qualifications for teachers and masters degrees in education, is widely available for those who want to develop their expertise and career further.
