Early Learning and Childcare

Early learning and childcare is the study and professional practice of supporting children's development, learning and wellbeing in the earliest years of life, from birth through to primary school age. The early years represent a period of extraordinary developmental change, and the environments, relationships and experiences that children encounter during this time have lasting effects on their cognitive, social, emotional and physical development. Practitioners in early learning and childcare draw on developmental psychology, pedagogy, play theory and child welfare to create environments and relationships that give children the best possible start.

At the University of the Highlands and Islands, this part-time programme is delivered in a way that allows you to attend classes at scheduled times and complete tasks independently, making it accessible to students who have existing commitments including work in early learning settings. You will develop your knowledge of child development theory, early years pedagogy, play-based learning, safeguarding and the professional frameworks that govern early learning practice in Scotland and across the UK. The programme combines academic study with the reflective practice that professional development in early years demands, encouraging you to connect theory directly to your experience of working with children.

Graduates in early learning and childcare pursue careers as early years practitioners, room leaders, nursery managers and early years teachers in nurseries, playgroups, childminding settings and the early years of primary school. The degree also supports career progression for those already working in the sector who want to move into leadership or specialist roles. Some graduates go on to postgraduate study in early childhood education, childhood studies or social work.
