Early Childhood

Early childhood is the field concerned with the development, care, and education of children from birth through the earliest years of life. Research consistently shows that the experiences children have in their first years have a profound and lasting effect on their cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. Understanding how to support children effectively during this critical period, and how to create the conditions in which all children can thrive, is both a scientific and a deeply ethical undertaking.

At the University of Warwick, this part-time degree equips you to work with children and families during the most formative years, from pregnancy through to age eight. You will develop the knowledge and practical tools to nurture children's development, promote equity and accessibility in early childhood settings, and advocate effectively for young children and their families. The programme draws on research in child development, psychology, sociology, and education policy to give you a grounded and critical understanding of what shapes early childhood experience and how practitioners can make a positive difference.

The part-time format allows you to study while maintaining professional commitments, which is particularly suited to those already working in early years settings who want to deepen their expertise and qualifications.

Graduates of early childhood programmes work as early years practitioners, nursery managers, family support workers, Sure Start and children's centre staff, health visitors, and social workers with young families. The degree provides a strong foundation for further professional training in early years teaching, social work, educational psychology, or health visiting. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in early childhood education, child development, or social policy, developing the specialist expertise that enables them to influence practice and policy beyond their immediate professional role.
