Early Childhood Studies

Early childhood studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines how children develop and learn during the most formative years of their lives. It draws on psychology, sociology, education theory and child health to build a picture of what children need to thrive, and of how families, practitioners and institutions can best support them. The early years, roughly from birth to eight, are now widely recognised as a period of exceptional developmental significance, making this a field with real practical and social importance.

This part-time programme at Wrexham University includes a foundation year, which gives you the opportunity to build strong academic foundations before moving into degree-level study. At Level 4 you will begin to develop the skills needed to work and think as a degree student, and you will prepare for and undertake your first six-week placement, giving you early direct experience with children and early years settings. Through the programme you will explore child development theory, safeguarding, play and learning, family support and the policy frameworks that govern early childhood provision in the UK.

Both the academic content and the placement experience prepare you to engage thoughtfully and professionally with the realities of working with young children.

Graduates from early childhood studies programmes are well prepared for roles in nurseries, primary schools, children's centres and family support services. Many go on to work as early years practitioners, family support workers, or in roles within local authority children's services. Teaching qualification routes and social work pathways are natural progressions for those who want to move into registered professional roles.

Postgraduate study in education, social work or child and family welfare is also an option, and the analytical skills the degree develops are valued in policy, research and third-sector organisations working with children and families.
