Early Childhood Studies

Early childhood studies is a discipline that recognises the first years of a child's life as uniquely important: developmentally rich, socially shaped, and deeply influenced by the quality of care and education that children receive. Drawing on psychology, sociology, education, and social policy, it develops a critically informed understanding of childhood as both a biological process and a social construction, one that looks different across cultures, historical periods, and economic circumstances. The field has grown considerably in importance as evidence of the lasting effects of early experience on learning, health, and wellbeing has accumulated.

At Wrexham University this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing the academic preparation needed for students to enter and succeed in the main degree. The foundation year builds strong foundations in the subject and in what it means to study at degree level, including an early six-week placement that connects academic learning to professional practice from the outset. Across the full programme you will study child development, attachment and play, early years provision, inclusive practice, safeguarding, and the policy and legislative frameworks that govern services for young children in Wales and beyond.

The degree develops both the theoretical understanding and the professional skills needed to work effectively in early childhood contexts.

You will develop reflective practice, research skills, and the ethical awareness needed to work with and advocate for young children and their families in a range of settings.

Graduates pursue careers in early years education and childcare, nursery and pre-school management, children's centres, family support services, children's social care, and play work. Many also go on to further professional training in primary teaching, social work, or health visiting, and the degree provides a strong platform for postgraduate study in early childhood, education, or social work.
