Early Childhood Studies

Early childhood studies is a discipline grounded in the understanding that the years from birth to eight are foundational for every dimension of human development: cognitive, physical, social, emotional, and moral. Children at this stage are not simply smaller versions of older learners but are experiencing a period of uniquely rapid change, and the quality of care, education, and relationships they encounter during these years has lasting effects that are well documented in research across developmental psychology, sociology, and education.

At Birmingham City University, this three-year full-time programme includes the Graduate Practitioner Competencies framework, which is designed to deepen the professional development of students who intend to work directly with young children and families. You will study the theoretical dimensions of early childhood, including child development, pedagogy, safeguarding, and inclusive practice, alongside the practical competencies that effective early years practitioners need to demonstrate. The programme has a strong commitment to social justice and equity, recognising that early childhood services are a critical site for addressing inequality and supporting the most vulnerable families.

You will develop the knowledge, skills, and reflective capacity to meet the needs of babies and young children across the birth-to-eight age range in a range of settings.

Graduates work in nurseries and early years settings, children's centres, primary schools in supporting roles, local authority children's services, family support, and the voluntary sector. The Graduate Practitioner Competencies provide a recognised professional framework that supports career development in the early years sector. Many graduates go on to professional qualifications in early years teaching, social work, or play therapy, using the early childhood studies degree as a strong professional and academic foundation.
