Early Childhood Studies

Early childhood studies is the academic discipline concerned with the development, wellbeing, and education of children from birth to approximately eight years of age. It draws on developmental psychology, education theory, sociology, health sciences, and policy studies to build a comprehensive understanding of how young children grow, learn, and thrive, and what conditions support or undermine those processes. The early years are now widely recognised as the most significant period for brain development and the laying of foundations for lifelong learning, health, and wellbeing, which makes the field both intellectually rich and professionally important.

At Birmingham Newman University, this four-year, full-time programme includes a foundation year, which provides the academic and professional grounding you need before entering the main degree. The programme develops your understanding of child development across cognitive, social, emotional, and physical domains, alongside the policy and legislative frameworks that govern early years provision in England. You will study approaches to learning and teaching in the early years, inclusive practice, safeguarding, the role of play, and family and community engagement, all of which are essential to high-quality early childhood practice.

The programme combines theoretical study with placement experience in early years settings, allowing you to apply your learning in real professional contexts.

Graduates from early childhood studies programmes work as early years practitioners, room leaders, and managers in nurseries, children's centres, and pre-school settings. Some go on to qualify as Early Years Teachers or primary school teachers through postgraduate routes. Others work in family support, children's social care, health visiting, play therapy, or policy roles within local authorities and voluntary organisations.

The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in education, social work, child psychology, or speech and language therapy for those who wish to specialise further.
