Early Childhood Studies

Early childhood studies is a discipline that focuses on the development, wellbeing, and rights of children from birth through to the age of eight, one of the most formative and consequential periods in human development. The field draws on developmental psychology, sociology, education, health, and social policy to examine how children grow, learn, and thrive, and what conditions in families, communities, and institutions support or undermine that flourishing. It takes children seriously as active participants in their own lives, not simply as subjects of adult care and instruction.

At the University of Northampton, this programme is offered on a part-time basis, making it accessible to students who are combining study with work or other commitments, including those who may already be working in early years or childcare settings. You will study child development across the key domains of physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development, engaging with the research evidence and theoretical frameworks that shape understanding in each area. You will also examine the policy contexts within which early childhood services operate, explore issues of inclusion and equality, and develop reflective professional practice.

The programme takes seriously both the academic and the values dimensions of working with young children, and supports you to develop as a thoughtful and evidence-informed practitioner.

Graduates from early childhood studies programmes go on to a wide range of careers working with and for young children and families, including roles in early years settings, schools, children's centres, family support services, health visiting, social care, and the voluntary sector. Some graduates progress to postgraduate study, including qualified teacher status programmes, social work, and early childhood research. Others move into policy, management, and leadership roles within early years organisations.
