Early Childhood Studies

Early childhood studies is a discipline concerned with the development, wellbeing, and education of children in the earliest years of their lives, typically from birth to around eight years old. It draws on developmental psychology, sociology, education theory, health, and social policy to build a rounded understanding of what children need to flourish, and what professionals, families, and communities can do to support them. As early years provision becomes increasingly recognised as critical to lifelong outcomes, the field continues to grow in professional importance and in academic depth.

At the University of Northampton, this three-year full-time degree gives you a broad understanding of the professional issues that underpin care and education in the early years. You will study child development and learning across cognitive, emotional, social, and physical domains, exploring how family, community, and wider social contexts shape children's experiences and outcomes. The programme pays attention to the rapidly evolving landscape of early years provision, both nationally in England and internationally, developing your awareness of different approaches to early childhood education and care and the policy frameworks that govern them.

Paediatric First Aid training is included as part of the course, and you will have the opportunity to complete the Early Childhood Graduate Practitioner Competencies, a recognised professional standard within the sector. You will also develop research and reflective practice skills that support continuing professional development throughout your career.

Graduates of early childhood studies go on to careers as early years educators, practitioners, and managers in settings including nurseries, children's centres, primary schools, and family support services. Others move into roles in social care, health visiting, play therapy, and education policy. The degree also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study in education, social work, child and family studies, or related fields for those who want to specialise further.
