Early Childhood Studies

Early childhood is widely understood to be the most formative period of human development. The experiences, relationships, and environments that children encounter in their first years of life have lasting effects on their cognitive, emotional, social, and physical development. Early childhood studies as a discipline draws on developmental psychology, education, sociology, health science, and social policy to understand those effects and to equip practitioners to support children and their families effectively.

This three-year programme at University College Birmingham prepares you for graduate-level practice in this crucial field.

You will study child development across the early years, examining how children learn and grow and what factors support or hinder that process. You will explore policy and practice in early years education and care, safeguarding and child protection, family support, and the sociology of childhood. The programme combines academic study with practical experience, developing the knowledge and professional skills needed to work with young children and their families in a range of settings.

You will graduate as a highly qualified graduate practitioner, with a depth of knowledge that distinguishes this qualification from shorter or less academically rigorous routes into the sector.

Graduates from early childhood studies programmes go on to work in nurseries, children's centres, schools, health visiting teams, social care, family support services, and the voluntary sector. The graduate practitioner qualification opens doors to leadership roles within early years settings and positions in local authority early years teams. Some graduates move into primary teaching by completing a PGCE, while others pursue postgraduate study in education, social work, or child and adolescent health.
