Early Childhood Studies

Early childhood studies is a multidisciplinary degree focused on the most formative years of human development, from birth to around eight years old. Drawing on education, health studies, social work, social policy, psychology and sociology, it equips graduates with a broad and theoretically grounded understanding of children's lives: how they develop, how families and communities shape their experience, how services and policies support or fail them, and what high-quality provision looks like in practice. As society has come to recognise more clearly the lasting importance of early years experiences, the professionals who work in this field have become increasingly valued.

At the University of Hull, this three-year programme places babies and young children at its heart, as the university describes, and draws on a team of tutors who are experts in their specialist areas including education, health, social care, psychology and sociology. You will study child development, play and learning, early years pedagogy, safeguarding and child protection, family and community support, children's rights and the policy frameworks that govern early childhood services in England. The degree develops your ability to think critically about evidence, to understand children's experiences from multiple disciplinary perspectives and to reflect on what good early years practice actually means and how it can be achieved.

This degree typically leads to professional roles in early years settings rather than directly to Qualified Teacher Status, though some graduates go on to gain further qualifications that enable them to teach.

Graduates go on to work as early years practitioners, room leaders and nursery managers, family support workers, children's centre staff, local authority early years advisers and researchers. Many pursue further professional qualifications including Early Years Teacher Status, PGCE, social work training or specialist roles in child psychology, health visiting or special educational needs. Further study in early childhood education, social policy or education is also a common route.
