Early Childhood Studies

Early childhood studies is a discipline that examines the development, learning, and wellbeing of children from birth to eight years old, drawing on psychology, sociology, education, and social policy to understand what children need and how those needs can be met. The early years are understood as a foundational period in which the quality of care and education children receive has lasting effects on their health, learning, and social development. This makes the people who work with young children and families among the most important contributors to long-term social wellbeing.

At Birmingham Newman University, this three-year full-time programme offers an accessible and purposeful route into working with young children and their families. You will explore how children grow and learn across the zero to eight age range, developing your understanding of child development theory alongside practical skills in observation, planning, and inclusive approaches to practice. The programme emphasises reflective practice, helping you to think critically about what works for different children and why, and to develop the professional judgement that effective early years work requires.
