Early Childhood Education

Early childhood education is the specialism concerned with how young children learn, develop and thrive in their earliest years, from birth through to age eight or so. It is a field grounded in developmental psychology, educational theory, child welfare policy and professional practice, and it takes seriously the evidence that the experiences children have in their earliest years have lasting consequences for their cognitive, social and emotional development. Graduate-level practitioners in early childhood education bring not only practical skill but the theoretical knowledge and critical perspective to lead practice, support colleagues and engage with the policy landscape that shapes children's services.

At the University of Bedfordshire this programme is delivered part-time and leads to a Graduate Practitioner qualification, which is designed for practitioners who are working in early years settings and want to develop their professional knowledge and status while continuing to work. The part-time model makes the programme accessible to those who cannot step away from employment to study full-time, and the work-based learning dimension means your study is always connected to the reality of working with young children. You will develop knowledge of child development theory, early years pedagogy, the statutory frameworks governing early childhood provision, observation and assessment of young children, leadership in early years settings, and inclusive practice for children with additional needs.

Graduates pursue careers in early years settings, children's centres, nurseries, pre-schools and the reception year of primary schools, as well as in leadership and management roles within the early years sector. The Graduate Practitioner status opens doors to senior practitioner and room leader roles. Some graduates go on to further study, including postgraduate qualifications in early childhood education or teaching, and some move into policy, advisory or inspection roles.
