Early Childhood Development and Learning

Early Childhood Development and Learning is the study of how children develop from birth through the early years, examining the interplay of biological, psychological, social and cultural factors that shape development and underpin learning. It is a discipline grounded in the research traditions of developmental psychology, education, sociology, and neuroscience, and it prepares practitioners who can support children's growth, wellbeing and learning with both evidence-based understanding and genuine sensitivity to the children and families they work with.

At Coventry University, this three-year full-time programme offers the opportunity to gain recognition as an Early Childhood Development Graduate Practitioner, subject to meeting placement and assessment criteria. This professional recognition is meaningful: it signals to employers that you have not only academic knowledge but the practical competence to work effectively with young children. You will study child development theory, play-based learning, inclusive practice, child protection and safeguarding, communication, and the curriculum frameworks and regulatory requirements that govern early years provision.

A sandwich year gives you extended professional experience in early years settings before your final year, and a year abroad and work placement are also available, broadening your perspective and professional development.

Graduates of Early Childhood Development programmes work in nurseries, children's centres, schools, family support services, social care, health visiting, and a range of roles in the voluntary sector concerned with children and families. Some go on to qualify as primary school teachers via a PGCE. Others move into educational psychology, family support work, early intervention, or child protection following postgraduate training.
