At the University of Chester, this four-year programme combines the study of early childhood and primary education with an integrated first year designed to build the knowledge, skills, and academic confidence needed to succeed at degree level. The programme explores child development, learning theory, curriculum design, and the social and cultural contexts in which children grow up. You will develop a thorough understanding of how children learn from birth through to primary school age, examining the roles of play, language, relationships, and environment in shaping development.

Alongside theory, you will develop reflective professional practice, building the practical skills that make for effective and responsive teaching and care. Chester's close links with local schools and early years settings provide opportunities for applied learning throughout the programme.

This is a full-time programme studied over four years. It is particularly suited to students who are committed to working with young children and want a thoroughly prepared academic and professional foundation. Graduates go on to careers in primary school teaching, early years education and care, children's services, family support, play and youth work, and a range of roles within schools and community settings.

Some graduates pursue further study, including postgraduate qualifications in education or early childhood, while others move directly into the classroom or into early years practice.
