Dutch and Romanian

Dutch and Romanian is a degree that brings together two European languages with their own distinct histories, literatures, and contemporary significance. Dutch is a West Germanic language, the official language of the Netherlands and Belgium and one of the most widely spoken Germanic languages in the world, with a history shaped by maritime commerce, global trade, and a Golden Age of art and thought that still resonates in the museum collections of Amsterdam and Antwerp. Romanian is the national language of Romania, a Romance language spoken by the easternmost major Romance-speaking community in Europe, with a literary and cultural tradition that has produced distinctive voices in poetry, fiction, and philosophy, and with a contemporary importance shaped by Romania's EU membership and its substantial diaspora across Western Europe.

At University College London, this four-year full-time programme develops your competence in both languages while giving you access to the cultures and intellectual traditions they open up. You will study Dutch and Romanian language at the level appropriate to your background, progressing through grammar, reading, writing, and spoken communication to advanced literary and professional register. Alongside language study, you will engage with literature, cultural history, film, and other cultural production in both traditions, developing the analytical and interpretive skills that are central to language and area studies.
